Practical Backpacking: ULA Podcast

Approach:
Ultralight Adventure Equipment specializes in lightweight and ultralight backpacking equipment. We offer unique products that address the needs of transitioning traditionalists, lightweight, and ultralight thru-hikers, day hikers, and any-distance backpackers. We have had, and continue to have, the opportunity to receive and share ideas with other hiking enthusiasts, and have worked to develop equipment that addresses the balance point between traditional and lightweight approaches to backcountry travel. In doing so, we feel we have successfully combined the two dueling approaches while preserving the underlying qualities of each. Our design strategy is simple: focus on the comfort and function of our products first, then focus on reducing weight.

For the Trail Ahead...:

This idea is more than just a catchphrase for marketing purposes. It is the underlying theme throughout our product line and influences our decision making in regard to the design and construction of all ULA-Equipment products. By using high quality materials and durable construction techniques, you can be certain that our equipment will last.

Direction:
Continue to produce unique, quality goods that meet/ exceed the needs of the community we serve.

Rant I: "Light n' Fast" vs. "Light n' Efficient"

Is anyone else tired of the "light and fast" marketing theme that is attached to lightweight and ultralight backpacking? I am!

Lightweight and UL Backpacking has never been about speed...IT IS ABOUT EFFICIENCY!!!

I cannot stress that enough. While carrying equipment that weighs less enables you to do longer and faster days should you choose to, the fact that you've taken (uh...you have right?) the time to create an efficient system of equipment that works to enhance your own personal hiking style is the real key and where the real benefit of this strategy exists.

So...whether setting a record on the JMT, or just kicking back lakeside with a fishin' pole, take the time to revel in your new found efficiency of being able to spend time in the backcountry in the manner you want...without all the stuff that you once thought necessary to have fun or  to be comfortable. I think you will find that your body and mind will appreciate the freedom regardless of mileage or pace!

Rant II: "Imitation vs. Innovation"

I make a real effort to not offer duplicitous equipment...meaning new products are just that : NEW. In the last few years there has been a major influx of lightweight and ultralight gear manufacturers to the outdoor equipment industry. Surprisingly these new companies have offered little in the way of originality or innovation and are essentially selling the same wares as everyone else.

So, what does this mean? Nothing really. Just a quick answer to why I choose not to sell Titanium Stakes, Catenary Tarps, Alcohol Stoves or Guyline on my site...in my opinion there are plenty of others who do a great job (www.gossamergear.com) with those items and there is no reason for me to offer a similar "Official ULA-Equipment Version" of a given product unless I can significantly improve upon it. Quality over Quantity.

Lastly I would encourage you to "dig-a-little-deeper" about the equipment you decide upon. Certainly make your decision based upon the products ultimate function for you specifically, but consider taking the time to find out about the history of the company, the product, and the person/people responsible for bringing the gear to market. As is often the case, new ideas are not really so new, and the original is often the best.
