Catalyst Review: http://www.ecotrend.org.uk/trek/?page_id=98

Brian,

I managed to take the Conduit out at the weekend. This was last night
out to test gear before embarking on my coast to coast hike across
Scotland. I was more or less carrying a full load and I was very
impressed with the Conduit. I found it incredibly comfortable. Am now
wondering whether I should take this on the actual hike itself,
rather than the Catalyst. I think I'll load it up and see.

Anyhow, another great pack! Thanks again.

Andy Howell

Brian,

We saw LOTS of Catalysts and Conduits on the John Muir Trail (JMT) this year. Your bags are clearly the products of choice with through hikers. Mine is the most robust, friendliest bag I've used in 30+ years of doing this.

All the Best,

Chuck Otis

Brian,

Just wanted to drop a line of thanks for the superb gear of yours. I successfully completed the PCT on Sept 30th (just a day ahead or so ofthe window slamming shut in the cascades). The Amigo Pro was noticed by many of my fellow hikers and I of course had plenty of good things to say about it. Hopefully I convinced a few of them to throw some scratch your way.

My Circuit performed well for most of the hike. I have to admit that I was preaching venomous hatred for it coming out of Kennedy Meadows with a big bear can full of 8 days of food and 5 pounds of camera equipment. The pack was far too overloaded and the blame was on me. The pack did hold up under over stressing loads down in southern california. Due to it being such a dry year there were a few too many 8 liter water carries and the pack performed better than me really... All in all the gear worked terrifically.

Have fun,

Fester

Hi Brian,

The ULA Conduit is a awesome pack, Shawn Forry showed me his one when he hiked the South Island of New Zealand in April. I recently purchased one through Mt Rogers Outfitters and have been well impressed by the whole pack and how comfortable it is for how little it weighs.

Happy hiking,

Brian:

I have taken my Catalyst on few weekend hikes.  The pack was a logical choice since I have a 24" torso measure. ( I am 6'6")  I was making the transition from external to internal frame.  I had to rethink some of the packing techniques.  The long mesh pocket is key to getting all my gear into the pack.

Last week we did 60 miles on the LT/AT in Vermont.  I found the pack to be very comfortable.  The hip pockets are great for on the run snacks and for a camera.  I carried all my meals and gear w/o food drops.  I had room to carry more if needed.  Pack weight was 36 lbs.  Yeah, this is heavy by lightweight standards but, clothing for the unsettled weather in VT and a Sara Lee pound cake and frosting to share with friends I was meeting mid way were worth it.

Nice to know that the pack could handle my little extras.  I plan to take the pack on a return trip to Philmont next year.

Thanks for great service.

Brian,

I wanted to thank you for the Amigo Pro Water Filter. I finally got to use it on-trail this weekend and I was the envy of all the “pumpers” around me. I volunteered to filter water when we got to camp then everyone figured out that I was just relaxing by the river while gravity did all the work. My little chore escape didn’t stay hidden long. It was so easy to use and great to be able to relax or work on other things during this time that used to be such a chore. Everyone in my party now wants one so I will be sending them your way.

Thanks again, for the great product!

Brian,

Just got back from eight days in escalante. I used the amp for multiple
three and four day trips. I love it. Thanks for the good work and keep
making great packs!

Brian,

The Circuit carries heavy-ish loads more comfortably than anything I've worn in the UL genre. Finally, a pack that doesn't ride my shoulders into the ground. It's gonna be my mainstay for desert hikes for a long time coming, methinks. And Death Valley / L2H awaits!

Brian--

You make a great pack.

I've been a backpacker for a long time (my original REI membership number had only four digits and the first was a one).  I also spent almost 30 years hauling amazing amounts of crap on my back as an Army infantryman.  I know good gear when I feel it on my back every day for six months.  Promise.

In early Feb, 2004 I began a thru-hike of the AT which I had deferred for 30 years.  I had a Lowe Alpine Contour IV loaded with about 40 pounds of stuff (a Winter 6-7 day load) and was happy.  By the time I got to Hot Springs, NC I was no longer happy.  Hauling everything in a pack that weighed 6.5 pounds empty was killing me.  I had already dumped everything else, cut off every extra strap, and discarded anything that was excess.  It was time to get rid of the pack.  Bluff Mountain Outfitters had a P-2 on display in their shop.  It was beautiful.  Unfortunately, I had seen reviews of the P-2, my thoughts were "to light".  I figured the gear would be made from materials too light to survive daily use over an extended period.  But, I was an idiot--who the hell is ULA anyway?  I bought a Go-Lite something--I forget which one.  It was rated for loads up to 40 pounds--it looked sturdy.

Twenty-four hours later half of the Go-Lite's hip belt had pulled out (no concept of seam allowance, searing synthetic fabric, and a plain old crappy design),  the foam frame sheet (to light to be useful at 20 pounds, much less 40) had folded into a permanently deformed piece junk and I was pissed.

I lugged the piece of junk, the rest of my gear and my body to Damascus; walked into Mount Rogers Outfitters and bought a P-2.  Best move I made in 2200 miles.

Your P-2 made it to Maine for the 4th of July; has done another 2500 miles since; and is still kicking butt 4 years later.  This Winter I'm headed North from Georgia again and the P-2 will be on my back.  A superb piece of equipment. I hope you saved one for the Smithsonian -- It's a marvel of design simplicity, material and manufacturing quality, and functionality, at a price that's well beyond competitive.

Tell your seamstresses they're the best.  Also -- I was stationed in Panama in the very early 80's  -- I can Salsa.  If I can dance anyone can.  Let them teach you.  If You need help, I'd suggest a six-pack of Bud.  Worked wonders for this Gringo.

Best of luck in your future endeavors and thanks for the great pack.

Thanks

Brian,

Just wanted to tell you that I took my new pack (Catalyst) on its maiden voyage. I went 4 days on the AT w/ 40lbs and the pack worked great! I have thin hips so it has been tough finding a pack that fits correctly but your pack was very comfortable. No shoulder strain or hip problems. Thanks for making a great product. The craftsmanship is wonderful.

Brian,

I received my Catalyst backpack the other day.  It looks and feels great.  I am looking forward to my first trip with it this year.  What a great design and the workmanship is fantastic.  Keep up the good work.

Brian,

By the way, I've put 400 miles on the Conduit this summer and I'm really
enjoying it.  Very nice ultralight pack.  Of all the packs I've tried, yours
continue to be the best suited for long miles and light loads.

Matt Roane

Brian,

I recently took my Catalyst pack out for its maiden voyage, a 45 mile section of the AT in Connecticut.  I hiked 40 miles over 3 days and finished the last 5 miles the morning of the fourth day.  The starting pack weight, including food and water, was about 30 to 31 pounds. I am very pleased with the way the Catalyst performed.  The design is very functional.  Every component serves a useful purpose.  There are no superfluous features.  The total pack volume was plenty for what I carried. The mesh pockets easily fit everything that I needed during the day.  And I'm sure that you have heard this before: the hipbelt pockets are great! The pack carried comfortably.  The hipbelt and shoulder straps are not as substantial (i.e., heavy) as those of my previous pack.  So before my hike I thought they may not be as comfortable.  I was proven wrong.  The hip belt was fine and the hipbelt pockets did not bother the swing of my arms when I hiked without any poles.  The shoulder straps were also comfortable. After my first hike with the Catalyst, I'm looking forward to many enjoyable miles.

Brian,

I did receive it today.  Thanks - the pack looks GREAT!! I can't wait to try it out.  The workmanship and design is outstanding and it definitely weighs much less than my Gregory and Dana Designs packs (oops - those are probably bad words!!!) Best of luck with ULA.  Thanks for your great communication, service and a great product.  Keep up the good work!

Brian,

I received my bag a day or so ago, EXCELLENT job. My girlfriend and I plan on taking a short trip soon, and hopefully the trip to Hawaii will happen this month also. Thank you for getting the bag to me in time for those trips. We are also planning on attending trail days in Damascus, VA. Will you be attending? If so I hope to see you there. Thank you again for contributing some excellent products to the outdoor community.

Brian -

I just wanted you to know that I have taken the pack out on several trial runs in the local mountains and it works beautifully -- comfortable, fits perfectly -- real craftsmanship  -- thanks a bundle for your work.

Tried out my backpack this weekend on some practice hikes.  Its terrific.  Fit and weight distribution are great, makes carrying load easier.  I'm very pleased.  Thanks so much.

Brian,

Hey, I got my pack last week, and it's awesome!  I can't wait to get out there and hit the trail.  It fits great, and I have no problems with packing.    I keep finding out cool stuff about it -- thanks for a great product.

Brian,

Thanks for your usual outstanding service. The pack lid and shoulder straps arrived safe and sound and are exactly what I wanted. Best for the Holidays to you and all at ULA.
