ULA Packing Cubes vs. Conforming Compression Cubes: Two Tools, One System

Oct 1, 2025 | Mixed Bag

Earlier this year, we introduced our Dragonfly Packing Cubes, designed to pair perfectly with the Dragonfly 30L and 36L packs for those that utilize them for travel. Now, we’re expanding the lineup with the new Conforming Compression Cubes — a more versatile option that works seamlessly in any bag.

We know there’s no single “right way” to pack. Some people thrive on structure and consistency, while others want flexibility to adapt on the fly. That’s why our packing cube lineup now gives you two complementary options:

  • Standard Dragonfly Packing Cubes — structured, modular, and purpose-built for the Dragonfly.

  • Conforming Compression Cubes — flexible, universal, and designed to work in any bag. For the agent of chaos that can’t decide on what item to leave out, now you don’t have to.

Both are built with the same durable materials and attention to detail, but each shines in a different way. Let’s break it down.

Standard Packing Cubes: Structured & Purpose-Built

When we designed the Dragonfly Packing Cubes, we knew wanted a packing solution that would fit it like a glove. The result was lightweight, structured blocks that slide perfectly into the Dragonfly 30L or 36L.

Why they stand out:

  • Optimized fit for the Dragonfly (30L or 36L)
  • Structured design keeps clothing stacked and predictable
  • Mesh face panel lets you see contents instantly
  • Clean modularity: cubes stack neatly and are offered in pack specific bundles like the 30L and 36L bundles.
  • Bonus: light enough to double as a pillow in a pinch

Best for: Travelers who want predictability, structure, and a clean modular system inside their Dragonfly pack.

Conforming Compression Cubes: Flexible & Universal

Not every trip looks the same. Sometimes you’re packing a bulky jacket, sometimes a week’s worth of layers, sometimes you’re not even carrying a ULA pack. That’s where the new Conforming Compression Cubes come in.

Built with the same 210D UltraGrid™ fabric but upgraded with an UltraStretch mesh gusset, these cubes adapt to your gear instead of forcing your gear to fit them. We’re able to fit about 2 extra days of clothing in the new Conforming Cubes.

Why they stand out:

  • Works in any bag — Not specific to the ULA line like the Dragonfly, Camino, Cicada. These are truly meant to give more flexibility in all your gear needs.

  • UltraStretch mesh gusset expands and contracts with your load. Peter had the bright idea of making the gusset out of UltraStretch mesh which grants an incredible give if you want to take some extra items.
  • Extra capacity: depending on your clothing size, they can fit an extra day or two of clothes compared to the Dragonfly Cubes

Best for: Travelers who value flexibility and want one cube system that adapts to whatever bag or loadout they’re using.

Same Family, Different Strengths

Both cube systems are available in Large, Medium, Small, and Shoe Cube sizes, meaning you don’t have to relearn your packing system. The difference is in how they perform:

  • Standard Cubes: Structured, predictable, optimized for the Dragonfly.

  • Conforming Cubes: Flexible, universal, capable of squeezing in extra capacity.

Which Should You Choose?

If you:

  • Carry a Dragonfly and love clean, modular efficiency → Standard Cubes are your perfect fit.

  • Want cubes that adapt to any bag, any loadout, and even give you a little more room → Conforming Cubes are the versatile upgrade.
  • Want the best of both → Mix and match for a packing system that can flex with every trip.
