UPDATED FOR 2024! The ULTRA Spare Tire (v2) is a compact, versatile waist pack that’s great for days on the trail where you need extra room and to keep things close at hand.
Zippered with easy-access pull tabs, the main compartment has an UltraStretch mesh divider to separate essential items, like your wallet, from everything else. The zippered front pocket has just enough space for all the daily essentials without weighing you down, while the back panel has an unzippered UltraStretch mesh pocket for easy access to your cell phone or securely storing trash from snacks on the go.
ULTRA fabric is 15x stronger than steel by weight, twice as abrasion resistant as standard 420D nylon, and waterproof to 200 psi. All zippers on the ULTRA Spare Tire waist pack are AquaGuard YKK for added water-resistance.

Constructed with an optimal blend of UHMWPE (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) and high-tenacity polyester, this tight weave is laminated with an eco-friendly adhesive to Challenge RUV™ film. I am female, 5’5″, 150 lbs. I bought (June 2026) the ULA Spare Tire (v2) in the ULTRA fabric and size L/XL to wear exclusively as a waist pack. First, the good. The XL was the correct size (I emailed before I bought, and was told correctly that the SM/M and L/XL packs are identical when they’re first produced, they just cut the strap off shorter for the SM/M). I was looking for a smallish waist pack with three external pockets (front, main, and back), with a side closure non-magnetic clasp (so I can easily put my hand over the clasp in a crowded area for security, when wearing the bag in the front). This is surprisingly hard to find, and the ULA Spare Tire fits the bill. The back pocket (the one against your stomach, when wearing the bag) is just an open stretch mesh, no zipper, but so far it’s been perfect for holding my phone securely against my body. I’ve attached it with a Pacsafe anti-theft wrist strap to one of the two little shoelace cord loops on each side of the bag, so even if it fell out of the stretch mesh pocket it wouldn’t go far–very handy. Now the things I would change the pack, if I could. The big one is the strap. It’s only 1-inch wide, and pretty rigid (not a softer material like a car seatbelt), which makes it uncomfortable to me when I’m wearing just a t-shirt. So much so, that I bought a Timbuk2 super strap pad to slide over the ULA strap, which helps, but doesn’t solve the problem entirely. Please replace the strap with a softer, seat-belt-like, 2-inch wide strap! The other big drawback is there’s zero strap management — no buckle system, not even an elastic band — so the loose end of the strap flaps around when I walk. It would be so easy to at least add an elastic strap keeper? A buckle system like Bellroy’s is even better (no loose end of the strap at all). I would actually have returned the bag based on those two drawbacks, but the return window is only 14 days (I missed it), and you have to pay $15 to return the bag. The other things I don’t love, but can live with: the ULTRA material is weird, it’s plastic coated on the inside, and is crinkly to the touch. I’m assuming this will make the bag close to waterproof (a plus), but it definitely affects the “feel” and sound of the bag when you touch it. There’s not much internal design, either–only one mesh pocket in the main compartment, and it’s tight, too tight for my sunglasses. There’s no internal keychain strap, or any internal attachment points. The only external attachment points are the shoelace-like loops on each side. I attached small carabiners to them to make them more versatile, but I wish they were metal D-rings (for strength). Everything I’m suggesting would likely up the price to make the bag, but I would have paid more for the added comfort and convenience. Maybe for v3?

Well used 500 miles along AT, it is now just starting to show wear. Great size for all daily & nightly items to avoid taking pack off. Waterproofing worked well. Excellent capability increase if your belt does not have pouches.
