WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING…

I love this hip pack. I have it packed for a summer overnighter on running trails. I have a hammock and Vargo Bot cook kit along with a mountain bicycle. The hip belts by ULA are the most comfortable I have found. I have a catalyst and fell in love with it. So for me a hip pack by ULA. Had to get one. I got one of the prototype from last year and have been using it abruns. to 5 times a week on trail runs.

This hip pack is missing one thing. A companion running backpack/vest made by ULA. It just needs to be big enough to fit a sleeping bag and my ursack. This would be awesome and solve a solution so I could run 3 seasons. I have been lookin at other companies running vests but I am apprehensive about others quality and no one seems to make a vest big enough for what I need. I trust ULA. I would be so stoked if you made a companion pack for the Burst.

    Thanks for hitting a homerun.

I purchased this pack for light hikes and bike rides, and after using a few times for each I have a good idea of what I like and dislike about the Burst.

Right away it is clear that this is an extremely comfortable lumbar pack that can hold it’s volume + water very well. The wide belt wraps around beautifully while the thick foam pad provides a sturdy and cushioned support. Aside from the water bottles (more on that later), the load felt extremely secure while hiking quickly or peddling. I was using a Mystery Ranch hip monkey for a similar purpose whose weight bounced worse and dug into my hips.

Visually, this is a really great looking bag. The cadet green might be my new favorite VX, similar to aqua but with a dash of viridian. Brushes off water and mud super easy, and the aquaguard zips provide some peace of mind. Stitching is excellent, and zippers are generally easy to use, unless you are using the water bottle pockets for water bottles. Even with a full pack, the bottle digs into the zipper area and obstructs the zipper path making it very difficult to access. I’ve just started taking a bottle out before opening which feels like a major flaw.

My main gripes with this pack are mainly about the water bottle pockets. Like I mentioned above, the bottles dig into the zipper path so much that it’s very difficult to access the main section without first taking out the bottles. Another major issue I have with these pockets is the lack of security. I have tried numerous bottles and none have felt secure. I would have loved for ULA to include a cinch cord of sorts to reduce bottles from jostling around while wearing, and preventing them from falling out while putting on/off or using the bottom shock cord.

The only pocket which can hold a phone (aside from main compartment) is against the lumbar, and while it is fleece lined and has a layer of foam, I really do not like to use this for my phone. It greatly reduces the comfort as I feel that hard rectangle pressing against me. The amount of pressure required to hold up 7 liters + water is more than I would like to subject my phone to. This might be less of an issue for those with a wider lumbar, but I can feel the pressure bowing my phone above my 32″ waist. I would have preferred a pocket on the lid flap as that is stress-free and easier to access.

The other pockets are nice and properly sized. My wallet fits nicely in the front-most pocket. The hip pockets hold my snacks and keys while remaining unobtrusive to my natural arm swing while walking. Even with my hands in my pockets, I was not rubbing against the fabric which I appreciate.

All in all, I still like this pack. For me it has been at its best while biking where I’m able to store my water on my bike, which is certainly unfortunate but something I hope to partially remedy with some cinch cord DIY (accepting any advice!). I will not be returning this as it is still one of the best options on the market from a really awesome company, it could just use some tweaks.

I hope this review helps some of you! Happy trails and keep up the good work ULA.
